“It was so exciting when Grace contacted us about organizing a 5K benefit race for New Song for her senior project,” shared Lisa Schloss, New Song’s Associate Director. “To see it all come together the day of the race was really amazing!”
Grace Flint, a senior at Columbus Christian High School, has had a love for children in need since she was a little girl. “Ever since I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a missionary teacher at an orphanage in Uganda,” Grace said. “When I worked at New Song last summer with my youth group from CCC (Community Church of Columbus), I was really amazed by the campus and wondered how I could support it more. Combining my love for racing in 5K events with a benefit for a children’s ministry was just the right fit for me.”
Grace contacted New Song last fall with the idea, which was very exciting to everyone in the ministry. Mrs. Schloss agreed to be her senior project mentor, providing Grace with help and support when needed. “Grace showed initiative, was energetic, and persevered through several challenges, gaining some good experience as she put the project together,” stated Mrs. Schloss.
The goal Grace set for the race was 100 participants and $2,000 raised for New Song. “Getting close to race day I was a little nervous,” said Grace, “I’m so thankful to the Lord for how He brought in so many volunteers and business sponsors to help. Getting on the race series with Indiana Timing really motivated 5K racers to come out.” Business sponsors included Elwood Staffing, Designscape Horticultural Services, Neal Paint & Wallpaper, Indiana Timing, Browns Antiques, Honeymoon Hauling, Haiderer Homes, Kevin Grider of State Farm, Tropical Smoothie, Natural Choices, Road ID, and White River Running.
A total of 106 people ran in the event, with eight age groups competing, including several young kids who ran their first race. Included among the runners and walkers that day were New Song’s teacher, Kyla Ramirez, her husband Erick, and Lisa and Bob Schloss. Housemom Erin Parsons dropped by with kids Malachi and Livy to cheer on the participants! The race, which was entitled “Homes for Kids 5K,” generated more than $2,000 to benefit New Song and provided a wonderful opportunity for community members to learn about our ministry for kids!
